The Holy Fathers call the Holy Sacrament of Repentance (Confession) the "second baptism." Through this sacrament, we regain the purity lost due to our sins.
The sacrament of confession is a great act of God's mercy shown to humanity, which is weak and prone to falling; in fact, this sacrament is a means available to all, leading the constantly sinning soul toward salvation.
Saint John of Kronstadt writes: "We must frequently confess our sins to defeat and chastise them with open acknowledgment and thus develop a greater hatred for them."
As Father Alexander Elchaninov writes, the hardening of the soul—its "insensitivity and deadness"—is the result of neglected and unconfessed sins. The soul feels immense relief when sins are confessed immediately, while the pain of committing them is still fresh. Delayed confession leads to spiritual insensitivity.
A person who frequently confesses and does not allow many sins to accumulate in their soul cannot help but be spiritually healthy. Confession is a grace-filled cleansing of the soul. In this sense, the great importance of confession and the overall life within the grace-filled help of the Church becomes evident. Therefore, do not delay your confession. Weak faith and doubt are not obstacles. Confess constantly, repent for your weak faith, doubts, powerlessness, and sins. It is true that full faith exists only in the righteous and those strong in spirit; how could we, the impure and faint-hearted, have their faith? If we had strong faith, we would be holy, strong, and divine, and we would not need this help from the Church, which She offers to us. Do not hide from this help.
Sincere repentance and confession of sins bring the Christian not only forgiveness but also the fullness of spiritual health.
