According to Holy Tradition, inherited from the apostles and the holy fathers, Christians should bless themselves with the sign of the Holy Cross. This should be done correctly, not carelessly or improperly as some do. An Orthodox Christian should cross themselves in the following way:
First, the first three fingers of the right hand should be brought together, symbolizing the Holy Trinity. With these fingers—thumb, index, and middle finger—joined together, we touch the forehead and say: In the name of the Father, then move down to the chest and say: and of the Son, then to the right shoulder, then to the left shoulder, saying: and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
During the reign of the Romans, the greatest criminals were punished by crucifixion. At the request of the Jewish priests, the greatest benefactor of the human race, our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, was condemned to this punishment. From that moment on, the cross became the symbol of the Christian faith. That is why Christians show it special reverence. The cross is the most visible outward sign by which a Christian affirms their faith. The Holy Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians:
"The Jews demand signs, and the Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Greeks." (1 Corinthians 1:22-28)
The Church hymn praises the honorable cross in this way:
"THE CROSS IS THE GUARDIAN OF THE UNIVERSE,
THE CROSS IS THE BEAUTY OF THE CHURCH,
THE CROSS IS THE STRENGTH OF RULERS,
THE CROSS IS THE GLORY OF ANGELS
AND THE DOWNFALL OF DEMONS."
Incorrectly making the sign of the cross grieves the Lord and is counted as a sin for the one who does it improperly. Such a crossing not only has no power but also brings joy to the evil one, as it is not a weapon against demons. The saints, through the power of the cross, healed the sick, raised the dead, helped people, and performed all kinds of miracles. Let us cross ourselves as often as possible—at the beginning and end of every good work—but let us do it correctly.
